Salford RLFC and Swinton Lions to Contest Inaugural Centenary Cup.
Salford RLFC are pleased to announce that our Betfred Championship fixture against Swinton Lions will be contested for the inaugural Centenary Cup, celebrating 100 years since Salford was granted city status.
The match will take place at the Brick Community Stadium on Saturday 8 August (2pm), with the Rugby Football League approving the fixture to be played as a cup tie in recognition of the city’s centenary celebrations.
The Centenary Cup begins a new chapter in one of Salford’s oldest sporting rivalries. It recognises two clubs that have played an important part in the city’s history while marking a significant milestone for Salford.
Throughout 2026, Salford has celebrated 100 years since becoming a city. While the trophy has been created to mark that landmark year, the Centenary Cup will become a lasting part of the rivalry between Salford RLFC and Swinton Lions, with the clubs competing for it in future meetings.
Salford RLFC Chief Executive Officer Ryan Brierley said:
“The rivalry between Salford and Swinton goes back generations, so it’s fitting that we can mark such an important year for our city by introducing the Centenary Cup.
“I’d like to thank the Rugby Football League and Swinton Lions for supporting the idea. It’s a trophy that recognises our city’s rugby league heritage and one we hope supporters of both clubs will look forward to competing for whenever our clubs meet.”
Whether wearing red or blue, supporters of both clubs have the opportunity to come together and mark an important moment in the city’s history while celebrating two clubs with deep roots in Salford.
With the Championship season entering its closing stages, the chance to become the first winners of the Centenary Cup means there’s even more at stake in an already important derby.
The Centenary Cup kicks off at 2pm before Wigan Warriors face Toulouse Olympique in the Betfred Championship at 5.30pm as part of a double-header at the Brick Community Stadium.
